The first Monday of the New Year, after all the celebrations and festivities have been concluded is one of the biggest days in history when cars break down. According to a statement made by one of Top Auto Recovery’s Finest patrol men – “Regardless of the gentle feel of the New Year’s weather condition, our patrol team at Top Auto Recovery is still preparing for what will ultimately be the most hectic car-break-down day of the year. This will eventually unfold as thousands and thousands of people try to head back to work on January the 4th. Most of them will be greeted with a broken down car.
The figures are mind blowing – over 10,388 cars were broken down at this same time of the year last year.
If you have a car, you do not want to be held down because of a broken down car with flat battery blues on the very first day you are returning back to work.
Top Auto Recovery is putting the word out there to all car owners and drivers to ensure that they don’t ultimately add up to the ever growing statistic of broken down vehicles this year.
Usually this breakdowns occur as a result of cars being left idle over a long period of time during the holiday season. Once this happens, car batteries begin to slowly discharge. Over the past 3 to 4 years, Top Auto Recovery’s patrol men have been summoned to more than 10,000 car breakdowns and we expect that this year the figures are going to increase.
At Top Auto Recovery we usually tell drivers that these cases of cars breaking down can be avoided totally. Usually, car batteries failing are some of the causes of vehicles breaking down. They measure up to a quarter.
To get around this, all car owners need to make sure that during the weekends, they drive around with their cars for a period of time. If they do this right, the batteries will stay alive long enough for them to find alternative solutions to other problems if and when they arise. Over the years, we have seen countless number of families with more than two vehicles suffer the most.
At Top Auto Recovery we believe that break downs can be avoided totally if vehicle owners take a little timeout to prepare for their return after the festive season.
We’ve found out that as a result of the effect the weather has on vehicles during the New Year season, the electrical system of vehicles need to work at least twice as hard. This is because vehicle owners make use of heating and lighting systems more.
During the morning periods, the motors in vehicles need more input in order to get vehicles started. This sometimes lead to battery failures.
When we headed out on the very first working day in the New Year of 2015 which was Monday, the kind of broken down vehicles we encountered where vehicles that refused to start as a result of battery failure. We saw this happen to 1 in every 4 vehicles that were broken down.
Top Auto Recovery guidelines for battery upkeep:
- If you have a garage at home, make sure that your car is packed inside before leaving for the festive season celebrations.
- To avoid vehicle break down or battery drainage, make it a point to disconnect or switch off all systems in the car including lights, heater, fan, heated rear windscreen, radio, sat-navigation systems, in-car DVD players and iPods. If some of these things are left connected to the car, vehicle failure is almost inevitable if these things are not checked.
- Batteries are highly corrosive to human skin and paint work. Always make it a point to ensure that your battery connection terminals are tightly connected and are free from corrosion.
- Vehicle owners that have used their batteries for over 4 years should get their batteries tested. Drive around with your car long enough to get your battery fully charged. Your car engine should also be running at the right temperature. This should be checked at least a day before the vehicle is used.
- Our experienced patrol officers always recommend that cars should be fueled and ready to go a day or two before its ready to be used. Doing this will save you the troubles of lining up in filling stations trying to get a gallon of fuel. For vehicle owners that are a few miles away from a filling station can seize the opportunity to get their batteries fully charged.
- Most vehicle owners might come up with an excuse that their fuel tanks are already filled to the brim. Whether you have a full tank or not, taking your car out for a drive a day before you’ll head back to work might be a life saver for you. For vehicle owners that don’t have a battery charger, this method will come in handy. Also note that simply switching the car on and then off will only do more harm than good to the life of your car battery.
